A Rapallo Street Scene
In April of 2025, I spent a week in Italy. We flew into Milan, then took the train to Santa Margherita Ligure, a town I had first visited a couple of years ago. SML is a wonderful place to spend a few days — it’s on the sea, has a beautiful harbor and architecture, and is just a short distance from Portofino.
On our second day in SML, we decided walk along the coast to Rapallo, about a 20- or 30-minute walk. I hadn’t been to Rapallo before, but I was pleasantly surprised. The old town area was a warren of street with cafes and other things to see.
I’m always interested in doing some street photography in places like this, and I’m fond of the way light cuts through streets and alleys and highlights certain subjects. I’m always looking for something interesting that’s in a pool of light. On this day, I was using one of my vintage film cameras loaded with Kodak Gold film.
I saw a view I liked with a church tower at the end of a street. There was light spilling into the scene from the left, highlighting a cafe table. Just as I put my finger on the shutter button, a child in yellow walked into the scene. It ended up being the perfect addition to the photo:
I’ll have more street photography to share from Italy soon.
