Spring in Pavia

In April 2025, I spent a few nights in Santa Margherita Ligure, along the Ligurian coast of Italy.  We had flown into Milan and taken the train to SML. When we headed back to Milan to fly out, we had an extra night so we decided to stay in Pavia, a town just south of Milan. I had never been to Pavia before, and it seemed like a place I might get some interesting photos.

Pavia is a town of about 70,000 which dates back to Roman times. The city was a major political center in the medieval period, being the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom from 540 to 553, of the Kingdom of the Lombards from 572 to 774, and of the Kingdom of Italy from 774 to 1024.

My approach to getting to know a place like Pavia is simply wander the streets, looking for interesting things and good light. Here are a few photos from a morning in Pavia.

I liked the way the morning light landed at the end of this alley:

Here’s a photo of one of Pavia’s church towers with some of the surrounding buildings:

As is typical for me, I’ve gotten very behind on blogging. I hope to have more to share from my April Italy trip, plus my June France trip. In addition, I’m headed back to Italy in September. More to come!
