Full Moon in Grand Haven
In early February 2026, I took a few days off to travel north to Michigan, hoping to get some nice photos of the lighthouses along the western coast of the state. I love traveling to this area in the winter when there’s ice and snow and every day brings something different. In addition, I timed my trip with a full moon, hoping to get some shots of the moon and lighthouses.
After arriving in Grand Haven, I found that there was plenty of ice surrounding the lighthouses. The pier has two structures, the second of which is actually a foghorn house. Like the inner lighthouse, it is red and lit with a red light.
When I arrived the morning of the full moon, I could tell that I would be fighting the clouds to get a good shot. It was very cold, with windchills at nearly twenty below zero. As the moon dropped toward the horizon, I shot this photo of the outer lighthouse/foghorn with the moon above, sinking into the clouds:
I normally prefer to have the moon closer to the lighthouse, so that I can zoom in even closer. Unfortunately, this was as close as they would get, as the clouds were very thick close to the horizon.
